RE: PAR - I did check Qobuz

Thanks Chris that is very interesting.

I would take issue with one point though. The AES statement " 24/96 recordings did not begin to appear until 1996 " is either incorrect or may be correct in terms of released recordings ( I have some vague memories of Pioneer doing something with DAT), but mastering @ 24 bit existed well before this. The dCS 900 converter design work commenced in 1988 and became a commercial product in 1989. It was the first true 24 bit converter. Wilma Cozart Fine personally chose it for the digitisation of the Mercury catalogue and it is for this reason that dCS have produced the films and podcasts that form the subject of this thread. However she may indeed have used it for 16 bit resolution but I am hoping that its capabilities were fully exploited with the result downsampled for CD release. Incidentally Bob Ludwig at Gateway Mastering also bought one at around that time.

Yes, only a few Mercury titles on Qobuz are currently available in high res and, as I said, they are 24/96. They may have been from Tom Fine or be sample rate conversions from the DSD digitisations of 2005 (or both). Unfortunately I only have a handful of the resulting SACDS so I can't align the two releases though there are at least a couple of repertoire matches.

However according to the news release this 70th anniversary project will feature the entire catalogue being released to streaming services. As the originals were digitised with a 24 bit capable converter I am hopeful that it was used fully and that this initiative (which looks like it will coincide with the actual anniversary later this summer) may result in 24 bit files as Tidal, Qobuz, Apple and Amazon are requesting that they are provided with such resolutions if available.
