From Perotin to Prokofiev (and beyond), performed by Caruso to Khatia, it's all here.

Music We All Know

The Weill Three Penny Opera Suite conducted by Weissberg on Nonesuch has long been a popular favorite, well played and recorded. There was a later version on Reference Records which, because on Reference, became an audiophile favorite.

On Amazon Music I came upon the 1958 Berlin recording supervised by and featuring Lotte Lenya. Besides the performance, said to be the stereo definitive, I am struck by the quality of the recording. If I were told it was recorded yesterday I would find that believable. The orchestra is a bit recessed as in a cabaret or off-broadway, rather than in a pit. They also do what I would call a sort of John Culshaw staging of the singing characters. It's great to hear the familiar tunes in context.

BTW, for what they call a "limited time" Amazon offers a 3 month free trial of the service. As best as I can tell, it is the full equivalent of Qobuz.
