Klemperer's life is fascinating. There is a great 2 volume bio by Peter Heyworth.
He was bipolar and you can relate his degree of mania (from his diaries) to the tempi he conducted at. He was up for directorship of the NY Philharmonic, but he kept grabbing the trustees' wives and getting into fights in Harlem....
