As with most composers' symphonic oeuvre, there is no complete set of Schubert's symphonies that contains every best performance. However, the Harnoncourt series with the RCO is a fine recording of entirely acceptable performances. There are no glaring eccentricities or shortcomings, and you get to hear the RCO in splendid sound. The readings are lithe and lean but not really "period" style. A considerable bonus is the availability of a complete set of four used CD's for a few bucks, a ridiculous bargain.
Once you have them all, I suggest you pick up one or two other versions of the two last symphonies. The one 9th (Great) I would avoid is the Furtwangler on DG, which is a frightfully dull recording of a bloated performance (Schubert played as Mahler?). If you put that disc next to the Harnoncourt on your shelf, they will repel each other. Szell leading Cleveland on Sony is reliably excellent but the sound is certainly not perfect, even as an SACD. The Solti/VPO is a very good recording of a beautiful performance, except for the last damn note of the whole work. The coupling is also beautiful.
