From Perotin to Prokofiev (and beyond), performed by Caruso to Khatia, it's all here.

Volkmar Andreae, the composer

This fellow is renowned for his conducting, especially Bruckner, but his own music is also very good. I recently picked up a couple Guild recordings of some symphonic music and chamber music, and they are both a pleasant surprise. The Symphony in C Major (conducted by his grandson!) will require another few listens to grasp it all, but it is tonal and melodious. The chamber music, a string quartet and trio and a violin sonata and some solo piano, is really enjoyable at first hearing and probably beyond. Very Brahmsian but slightly modernized, and that's fine with me. Superb recording of the chamber, decent symphonic.

The music is conservative for its time, but I never considered that the impediment to appreciation that many critics do. I don't understand why, if music was perfectly good 30 or 40 years prior, a similar style is frowned upon if composed recently.

I got both discs from BRO. I plan to get more of his meager output.

Peace,
Tom E
