I agree completely with both of Mr. Marks' posts.
I find the Cypress Qt. mostly restrained (non-interventionist) in their readings. Where they may not be, it usually suits my taste, and, in any event, is never excessive.
I've only listened to a few of the Takacs recordings because I didn't like any of what I heard. Beethoven's String Quartets are inherently dramatic and, to me, the Takacs try to double the dramatic qualities wherever they can. It's incredibly overbearing. I likewise couldn't get through the whole Tokyo HM set, which unlike their very fine RCA one, is slack and flabby, as others have noted.
