I have heard people speak of a "Hybrid" Decca Tree wherein the front + center (usually Omni) microphone is replaced by a "Mid-Side Matrix" array of a forward-pointing (or, somewhat downward pointing) Cardioid Mid microphone, and a side-facing matrixed "Side" Figure-8 microphone.
The "M-S Matrix Box" splits the Figure-8 output into + and - (phase and antiphase) and variably combines it with the cardioid output, so that by twisting one knob in the recording shack, you can vary the width of the "virtual stereo pair" in the front position. IIRC, depending on the pattern of the cardioid, you can go anywhere from all-cardioid, no F8 (30 degree included angle, or so) to all-F8+/-, no cadioid (150 degree included angle).
But as a practical matter, the "virtual pair" ends up somewhere between 90 degrees X/Y and 120 degrees X/Y.
And then of course, when you mix the Tree, it is Left Outrigger plus the Left side of the front virtual pair, et mutatis mutandis.
