Actually, one of the Steinberg/Pittsburgh Command Classics recordings which REALLY impressed me when I was in high school was the Ring excerpts album, which contained Ride of the Valkyries. I was very struck by how precisely the triangle had been recorded on that track - you could hear (and still can hear) the precise rhythmic figure on every repetition! So maybe they had a spot mike on the triangle! ;-)OTOH, another recording which comes extremely close in its clarity of texture and its precise presentation of the triangle figures in that work is the Sheffield Leinsdorf/LAPO recording - which was recorded with a single stereo microphone!
EDIT: BTW, didn't the Decca Tree sometimes contain "outrigger" microphones, for a total of five, rather than three?
