I was sampling the Elgar/Menuhin VC on youtube just now, in fact. The performance doesn't seemed rushed compared to Elgar's recordings of the 1st Symphony and Enigma's, whether that's due to Elgar's desires or the exigencies of early technology, I don't know.
I see that Campoli has recorded it. I love his Tchaikovsky VC with Argenta (and the recording quality!), so I'm intrigued by his Elgar. The 70s mega-star violinists have as well: Perlman and Chung.
No Hugh Bean available to download, unfortunately. One of my favorite EMI Lps featured Bean in Vaughan William's Violin Sonata, Phantasy Quintet (wonderful music!) and Six Folksong Studies. His Lark Ascending is still my favorite.
I've been whiling away the morning sampling the 2nd mov't Andante's of all the available Elgar VC's on Presto. Some are faster than others, (Jurowski's), and even through my tiny computer speakers it's pretty easy to distinguish one string section's corporate sound from another.
Very interesting how some seem to set a mood better than others.
