From Perotin to Prokofiev (and beyond), performed by Caruso to Khatia, it's all here.

RE: This is a discussion about **accuracy**

"There is no reasonable measure of the original acoustic waveform and the waveform created in playback. They are utterly and totally different. "

Yes, but that is not what matters.

What matters is the two, 2 D single composite wave forms that hits each of your ears vs. the two, 2 D single composite wave forms that hits each of stereo microphone's capsules.

When you listen live you can only experience the 3 dimensional acoustic waveform with your two ears. You can't really experience the 3 dimensional acoustic waveform itself.

A stereo microphone, listening live can only experience the 3 dimensional acoustic waveform with it's two capsules. The microphone can't really experience the 3 dimensional acoustic waveform itself.

So it doesn't matter if the original 3 dimensional acoustic waveform is not properly recreated by the recording/playback system. What matters is whether or not what hits your ears on playback is the same as what hit the microphone at the time of the recording.
