As a musician used to the sound of most instruments (orchestra, chamber, jazz) I have only 2 priorities and they go together: timbre and transparency. These can be checked in a useful though not perfect way by playing acoustic recordings (orchestra, voice, jazz) and AB-ing units. Timbre - does it sound spookily like the original instrument? Transparency - can you hear more detail using one unit that using another unit? All the rest is of no importance to me - perfect top to bottom frequency response, soundstage etc.I get all this from my system using only 2 stages of directly heated triodes and single unit speakers (no crossover). Big power supplies full of chokes
I really have no time for theoretical discussions about accuracy, distortion measurements etc. etc. My ears tell me when I get timbre and transparency. I build my own stuff.
