From Perotin to Prokofiev (and beyond), performed by Caruso to Khatia, it's all here.

RE: Finally - back to the important stuff: accuracy or euphony?

I think both of you are right in different ways. All I will comment on right now is Scott's comments on the objectivist's idea of "accuracy." I agree with him 100% here. The problem for me is that for at least the vast majority of these objectivists who I have read comments from on various audio sites, the accuracy is NOT to what the music should sound like, but to the electronic signal, which of course has nothing to do with the music. Another way to put it - their fidelity is to the recording signal rather than what the music actually sounded like in the space in which it was recorded.

As Scott points out, a high end vinyl playback system will still, even with digital's improvements, always sound much better, despite analog playback having more "distortions". As many others have said, the distortions of analog, though technically greater, are much easier on the human ear than the distortions of digital, which are harsher. Even versus odd harmonics, etc. This is easily demonstrated. I am blanking on his last name, but Ralph, who makes the Atmasphere amps, has written much about this on audiogon. So the idea that the goal should be to have no "distortions" is bullshit, as Scott says.
