Home Classical Court

From Perotin to Prokofiev (and beyond), performed by Caruso to Khatia, it's all here.

I do the same thing as you, but usually in a different order

In the case of this new Levinson amp (it's class AB, but never gets out of class A in most listening situations), its rated output (250 watts into 8 ohms) is exactly the same as my previous (class D) PS Audio GCC-250. Frankly, I have to say that I'm amazed that an amp of the same power rating can make such a difference - I wouldn't have believed it before the last couple of days. The new amp practically screams, "Respect my authoritah!". ;-)

Anyway, it's odd (or maybe not!) that the first few selections I played were old "golden age" recordings (Solti Rheingold, Steinberg/Pittsburgh Beethoven Symphony No. 1, and Fennell/Eastman Walton Crown Imperial). Later on, I branched out into the more modern MCh realm (Hickox/LSO Butterworth Banks of the Green Willow and first movement of the RVW 1913 London Symphony, then Medtner Concerto No. 2 with Sudbin). It's always exciting to discover what else was lurking on recordings you thought you knew well. There hasn't yet been a recording I've played where I haven't noticed a difference (and sometimes a huge difference!) for the better - and all from an amp with the same power rating.
