1954 to 1959, recording "golden age"?

I continue to marvel at the sound quality of my CDs recorded from 1954 to 1959 by RCA Living Stereo, Mercury Living Presence and Decca. I know it is a cliché to describe this period as a "Golden Age" but if there ever was one that was it. It is most remarkable what was achieved with three microphones and perhaps first or second generation tape recorders.

I have the Leonard Bernstein Remastered100-CD box set. It contains Bernstein's classic Columbia Masterworks recordings. As a group, I find the sound quality lack luster. The best sounding recording is Bernstein's Shostakovich 5th recorded in Boston's Symphony Hall in 1959. Aside from his performance on that disk, which is stupendous, I don't find his work on the others competitive with his contemporary conductors.
