Can I humbly say it's probably in the production.
My DGG Peer Gynt excerpts with BPO is a good record. But, often the 70-80s DGG Karajan records have wide dynamic range (unrealistic) and multi miking. Thus, you can have very low levels, marred by surface noise.
I don't know your particular pressing, but many here have expressed disappointment with reissues and newer audiophile type pressings.
