Hydra?

I've always liked hearing other audiophiles describe their interactions with the late Stu. He was instrumental, in letting me (and others) into the door, of high-end audio. In summer of 1990, when ADL was on Waialae, near the Palolo McDonald's, Stu clearly saw that I was a penniless college student. But he nevertheless asked me what kind of music I wanted to hear, and then he scanned his shelves for LPs from Judas Priest and Skid Row. He patiently demonstrated the effects of cones and pucks under CD players, and between stand and speaker. Stu understood that, even though I may not spend much at that moment, if I were won over, I'd come back years later, when I did have more money.

Here in SF, maybe it was the late-90s, when I auditioned Shunyata's first PLC, perhaps called the Hydra. It was a chunky black unit, with a slick top. If you picked it up, turned it, and shook it, it made a shooshing sound, kind of like a bodyboard in surf. Those were the sand-like materials, designed to absorb noise.

Sonically, the Shunyata PLC was..... okay . It made my Theta/Mark Levinson/Classe' system sound dark and sultry. Some listeners liked it, others didn't. I didn't think it was accurate, and did not end up keeping it. Again, the Vans Evers Model 85 "doing nothing" was like a glass of clean and fresh water -- not exciting, but refreshing and much-appreciated.
