Model 85

I know I have a photo of the Vans Evers Model 85 somewhere, but it's probably at my parents' place in SF. Oahu residents might recognize the narrow sidewalks, with the strip of short-blade grass.

In summer of 1991, Stu was already cutting off the skimpy fixed powercords from electronic components, and hard-wiring thicker ones (later MIT Z-Cords). This is the first time I've ever heard about tweaking a Vans Evers PLC, but, if you knew Stu, this comes as no surprise.

In the late-90s, my PLCs were MIT's Z-Center and Z-Iso-Duo. Sonically, these units made my systems sound smoother, but more opaque. Moreover, when the sound was off, you could hear (and feel!) the buzz of the transformers.

I think I paid an extra $150, to get the Vans Evers Model 85 in white. They did an excellent job, the paint being smooth and consistent. Sonically, the Model 85 did not impose. Therefore, it wasn't as opaque as the MITs. Moreover, the Model 85 was operationally quiet. Add in that the Model 85, even with the $150 surcharge to get it in white, was cheaper than the MITs, it was a winner.
