Tara Labs ISM OnBoard Digital 75, Part 7

8 years ago, I was working at a mid-Peninsula high school. It seemed that, every time I pulled into the parking lot, and every time I left, Zedd's "Clarity" played. Because of the school's location, well-heeled audiophiles would meet me. Many of whom dropped off cables, so that they (the cables) would go on my audiodharma Cable Cooker.

Just like in audio and music, the school was about more information. Interestingly, the male students wanted me to talk about kicking ass in sports. Meanwhile, the female students wanted to know about relationships. My students were initially disappointed that (a) my teams and I sucked and lost, and (b) I was always rejected. But they came to appreciate the honesty and candidness, and they just liked hearing me talk story. The VP, who brought Stanford athletes to give talks, would come over, and tell the students, "Naw, naw, naw; don't get caught up in Mr. Lum's talk of being a loser. He's the kind where, you are whooping his team on the field. But then you look up at the scoreboard, and you're only up by 1!"

We would take the students on field trips throughout the South Bay. We even took them to Santa Cruz, where I went to college. I directed them, "Do not ease yourself into that ice-cold water. That is pure torture. Just dive right in." Notice that the seas appear calm. Yet, a single wave rose up, near the shore. Yes, that is Lummy, duck-diving under the breaking wave.

In 2013, samples of Tara Labs' ISM OnBoard Digital 75 came my way. They sounded more rough, grayed-out, dirty, and garbled, than the ISM OnBoard The 0.8 I had been using since the 2000s. But they were more accurate, transparent, and open, than my AudioQuest, Cardas, Illuminati, Kimber, MIT, Nordost, Stereovox, Wireworld, and XLO digital cables. Yes, the ISM OnBoard Digital 75 is directional.

I had a beat-up, rusting, dented, dirty white 2001 Mazda Protege. I explained to my students that giving a cable regular playing time is like using a squirt gun, to wash my car. Getting the audiodharma Cable Cooker is like arming yourself with buckets, hose, soap, sponges, sprays, and towels.

A mere 80 mintues on the Cable Cooker outdoes 8 years of regular playing time. Having experimented with multiple samples of ISM OnBoard Digital 75, we have found that most of the "burn-in" occurs by the 2-day mark. But the ISM OnBoard Digital 75 can see 4 days, without sounding over-Cooked.

Untreated, the ISM OnBoard Digital 75 is already excellent (though not as good as the twice-as-much The 0.8). Cooking it is like getting a thorough car wash, or not wiping out, while surfing. It's as if the cable firmly lectures, "Stop messing around. Get me on the Cooker. I will reward you with being see-through transparent, keeping up with whatever your sources and DACs can do."
