Tara Labs ISM OnBoard Digital 75, Part 6

In the early-2000s, TLS was my first serious girlfriend who was not a nerd. She lived at home (on a clear day, you could go on the roof, look north, and see the Golden Gate Bridge), worked here and there, and took a few classes at SF State. She took over 8 years, to get her degree. TLS' girlfriends were stylish. TLS wanted to be that way, too, but simply could not afford it.

With a limited budget, TLS restricted her wardrobe to black or white, plus the occasional blue jeans. We loved going around in her black mid-90s 2-door Honda Civic EX sedan. Yes, because TLS liked the color black, that made it okay for me to get the black-colored Mark Levinson Nos. 360 DAC and 380 preamp. That also made it okay for me to get the black-jacketed Tara Labs ISM The One interconnects.

Hoo wee, TLS' girlfriends were unlike anyone I had ever hung out with. TLS liked going to hot tub & sauna spas. Her girlfriends went further, and opted for body treatments and massages. With a couple of girlfriends, TLS and I went down to Palo Alto's Watercourse Way. On the way down 101, the two girlfriends joyfully sang along to the Backstreet Boys' "More Than That," and all was right in our world.

After sweating in the sauna, easing yourself into the cold plunge (right) is torturous. Just jump right in. The jolt of the cold plunge gets your heart going, and you gain clarity of thought. All of a sudden, you are not as pressured or confused, about matters audio. We booked back-to-back tub rental, but the two girlfriends left after about 40 minutes, to get body scrub/oil and massage. SMH, and after that, the girlfriends went into the bathroom, and put on makeup.

When I initially bought Tara Labs ISM The One Digital, it was primarily used between a Theta Jade and Mark Levinson No. 360. It was also tried in a secondary system of CAL Delta and Theta Cobalt 307. I think a 1-meter cable was $1100 or $1200. Compared to all of our previous digital cables, The One, by being clean and transparent, was far more revealing. It was like jumping into the cold plunge. For an additional $500, you could buy a larger Digital Ground Station, whose greater noise dissipation allowed for even cleaner and more full-bodied sonics. That was like adding luxurious body treatment and massage!

Later in the 2000s, Tara Labs came out with so-called ISM "OnBoard" models. Instead of outboard Grounding Stations, Tara Labs encapsulated them along the cable itself. An ISM OnBoard Digital 75 can be ordered with either BNCs or RCAs. A 1-meter cable retails for $1200. A 110-ohm XLR-equipped AES/EBU cable is also the same price.

Tip-to-tip, the OnBoard module is 3" long. The diameter is 1". The ISM digital cables were so open and accurate, I replaced the lousy Theta Jade with a Mark Levinson No. 37.

We have previously covered the BNC plug. This cable comes with RCAs.

Alas, it is a locking-barrel RCA, which is difficult to use. Yes, you can unscrew the tightening collar all the way off. On your equipment, you will need one hand to hold the cable in place, while you spin/rotate/tighten the collar.

Interestingly, there is a sticker on the base of the inner RCA. But there is also a serial number on the external metal sleeve. Like some of TLS' clothing, the outer jacket is a black mesh.
