AudioQuest Hawk Eye, Part 2

In 2003, Michael McDonald did a cover of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," which my ex-girlfriend, KJ, did not like.

Ah, so it turns out that I saw Phantom Of The Opera in 1996 with my then-girlfriend ACS. The Sunday matinee mezzanine seats were still $65 each. In 2003, I saw Phantom with KJ, but this time at the Orpheum. And Saturday night loge seats were a whopping $85 each.

By 2003, AudioQuest had a digital cable called the Hawk Eye. It then came with their so-called DBS "Dielectric Bias System" battery pack. It was 48V, with a slide-out back panel, like those found on the back of a remote control.

In 2013, Michael McDonald (following Boz Scaggs) played on the first day of the Stern Grove Festival. His band did indeed perform "Ain't No Mountain High Enough."

My audio friend says that, in 2013, he purchased this AQ Hawk Eye new. By then, it had come with a 72V DBS pack, whose rubbery plastic surfaces are sticky.

A DBS pack is strapped to the cable proper. Yes, you can slide the pack up and down the cable, but the lead is about 4" long, and is fixed to the source RCA/BNC/XLR plug.

For the 72V pack, you will need a tiny Phillips screwdriver, to remove and re-attach the end cap. Note that there are a total of six 12V A23 batteries, to get the 72V (6 x 12 = 72).

If you press the test button, and the green LED lights up, then you know the batteries (and thus, the connected DBS) are working.

"Ain't No Mountain High Enough" was written way back in 1966 by Ashford & Simpson. It was popularized the following year, when Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell did it as a duet. In 1970, Diana Ross did a solo recording, which would, years later, appear in Bridget Jones's Diary and Chicken Little .
