RE: TOSLINK or HDMI to RCA converter?

I can't say enough good stuff about Lifatech TOSLINK cables. Say the TV is a lower-line model a few years old (the cheap kind I'm used to), the E/O optical interfaces and particularly the connector construction can be pretty bad. (TV manufacturers don't spend much in audio, for sure- look at the hideous design specs for HDMI.) I'd give the TOSLINK utput a critical listen before committing to a Lifatech cable- they ain't cheap.

The RCA converter the OP refers to may have some limitations. These aren't quite as simple as "HDMI in => stereo audio out" - they're sort of an extractor. I've found "handshake" issues in these boxes where it can't read the HDMI without a downstream HDMI device attached. Also if the program is multichannel audio there might not be any stereo output via the RCA's. Read the specs carefully. I've used a generic Amazon box and it sounded like crap.

I don't think there's any great way to get decent audio out of a TV. I ended up buying a Rotel A-V-Pre to decent stereo via HDMI. It's definitely not good enough for music however.
