If the load is real and linear then power factor will be at unity. The goal of achieving it plays into the desire to transmit/receive clean power on demand. Phase delay from unwanted energy storage elements and signal distortion from nonlinear loads, when left unchecked, and if of appropriate scale, can cause problems rising to the level of making it impossible to deliver power reliably, within spec.
