RE: Now you're just being a troll

It's ALL opinion, so little of it can be proven. This is one of the few audio sites where outrageous claims are accepted as valid, and it should stay that way. Some posters here get a little carried away with their sense of infallibility and can make declarations we might find disagreeable. At some point you have to let that stuff slide. Post your opposing viewpoint and engage them in discussion even if their defensiveness makes it difficult, but don't stamp your foot and cantankerously make demands for proof. There is none.

And finally, air as it relates to audio is the sense that there is space around and within the sound image projected by speakers. It is difficult to achieve that illusion unless the equipment is accurate and the listener's location is ideal. We hardly take notice of it in real life, but we should be able to detect its absence or presence when reproducing decent recordings. I can easily hear the space around Paul McCartney singing "Blackbird." The image of his voice is present in the room and occupies a distinct 3D space between the speakers, a sonic sculpture. His guitar is a bit flatter because it is hard-panned into the right channel, but it still has its own depth and space. What I believe to be a metronome in the left channel could really be sitting on top of the speaker and not sound at all different from the recording. Even an old (remastered) rock recording can project "air" if it is reproduced accurately, and many SACD's do it superbly. I have heard "Blackbird" on dozens of different systems, but, while the FR may be accurate, it is not always so very realistic. The difference is "air." If your system doesn't have it, you'll probably never miss it. But once you hear music that way, it's very difficult to accept its absence.

Peace,
Tom E
