I built this cable using Duster's recipe, above, with the shield grounded at the source (headphone amp) only. The covering is a soft nylon sleeve, 1/4" nominal size from my local electronic jobber- the resulting cord is very light and flexible plus- if I do say so myself- quite attractive. Thus far, the sound seems 100% identical to connecting my cans' 3.5mm mini through a 6.35mm adapter to my amp. Can't ask for more than that!
I'm breaking in a new pair of the Massdrop Sennheiser "HD-6XX" headphones, seemingly identical in every way to 650's except for the wonderfully low price. The sound is taking a little getting used to after listening to my trusty 580's for lo these many years. Very articulate midrange, very neutral. When I went to the LA Audio Show this year, many exhibitors in the giant headphone room demo-ed their gear using Senn 650's; they seemed a baseline for ordinary-people headphones. A good choice.
