I think 16ga is much too large for an IC. There is nothing to be gained from using such a large wire because very little current is flowing. I've built quite a few IC's, of varying gauges (18 is largest I've tried, and it was DULL) and configurations and materials (mostly silver and OCC copper), and I've found that larger gauge wire causes a loss of high frequencies and, hence, detail and spatial cues, as well as poorly defined low frequencies. It is not subtle, and no connector, no matter how fancy, will adequately compensate. Besides, 16ga is not very flexible. Did you see this size wire recommended by someone? I have never seen it, and I am not aware of any commercial manufacturers who use wire that large.I recommend you consider 20ga maximum, with 24ga being the ideal for evenly distributed FR and mechanical convenience and strength.
Good luck with your experiment. Please share the results with us.
