You have a design approach for your speaker cables that seems sound - if you have 2 strands of 18 Ga. in parallel to each speaker terminal that's about equivalent to 15 Ga. That's a good gage for moderate length runs, maybe <10 ft. each for non-exotic speakers -- opinions vary and YMMV.
You might find the below article interesting- it is based on using CAT-5 (or any similar "CAT"-number) wire for speaker cables. Read what he says about twisting the wires, it should apply to your multi 18 Ga. also.

One entire strand of CAT (with eight, 24 Ga. wires inside), all put in parallel = 15 Ga. also. I've made several sets of CAT-5 twisted pairs (doubles) per the article and they sound darn good. Better still- it's is dirt cheap!
