I've operated in both paradigms and find that there is no single answer to your question-- it's all very system dependent. Powered loudspeakers rarely work out for an audio-hobbyist's system, that's why they seem to end up in use in studuios, and maybe cheaper onebox things at home. They overcome a relatively small problem (cabling) in trade for a slew of other problems (undefined quality-level amplifier design, inflexibility come to mind).
I actually *like* my speaker cables, so do my vinage Thiel CS3's. 6-ft. runs of Kimber give a relaxed and smooth performance in my system, with a big Adcom amp. Not overly expensive and unchanged for years now. There's been lots better places I felt called to spend my audio dollars- at least I thought so at the time! Improving my digital front end has ben the best benefit/cost activity recently- it sounds so nice I'm in orocess of DIY-ing all new interconnects. Just 2-cents of Bear wiz.
