Seems when a better cable is swapped in, you may hear nothing at all in the first few minutes, or hours... there may be tiny effects on treble roll-off or absolute level, say, but the real deal is coherent musical presentation.
The effects of good cables remains small, versus say the basic performance characteristics of a system determined by frequency response, power/dynamics, freedom from colorations. But once your system is sounding natural, lively and solid that's when you can hear the difference in cabling. Like other stuff in audio, you train your ear to hear the differences. Once you've heard it, you don't go back.
