I did the same thing on one of my Sony ES cd players a while ago and noticed the same improvements. Only on mine I polished up the blades a bit. I figured if it was good enough for the fancy plugs it was good enough for me.

If you don't want to go as far as powecord replacement and are handy with a soldering iron, eliminate the low grade connectors where the stock cord plugs into the power supply board and hard wire the power cord leads directly to the circuit board. More crappy connections out of the circuit = better sound.

As others have said, a better wall outlet and an even better plug will give even better results. It did with mine ;-)
