Home Cable Asylum

Interconnects, speaker wire, power cords. Ask the Cable Guys.

RE: Took the balanced cable plunge, it sounds horrible!

Balanced cables developed from a need for long runs of analog information. Any long run of wire can be a potential AM radio antenna so before balanced mic cables, runs had to be short. Runs now can be in the hundreds of feet carrying less than 100 milli-volts of audio signal with extremely low noise and very little line loss of signal.

Typically, balanced outputs on audio gear (home) is hotter(more output) and quieter by 8-10 db. is there a difference between the 110 db S/N ratio of the RCA output and the S/N ratio of 120 db. of the balance outputs. Yes. The difference in mathematical terms is huge
and while you may not readily notice the difference between the two outputs other than difference in levels, there is greater rejection of EMR and other artifacts as well as the fact that the design self-cancels the noise that it generates as well.

It is a better way to go and that is why it has been used with pro audio gear for many years.

Patience. Burn-in takes hundreds of hours in a two steps forward, one step back fashion. Cheers.
