OEM power cords are quite good in one respect, the conductors are spot welded to the prongs/connectors and that is best. On the negative side, the conductors are always just big enough to serve the load rating of the equipment they come with; and the really cheap ones don't have twisted conductors.
The real disaster(s) (meaning don't use under any circumstances) are the shielded OEM cords (usually supplied with digital gear) because UL requires the shield be connected to the ground pin of the plug at each end -- hum city!! NOTE: If you want to tinker, you can "re-manufacture" the IEC end of a shielded cord so the shield isn't connected (floating shield) and wind up with a pretty good power cord for your digital stuff.
