RE: AQ NRG 2 application

Brett A,

About a year ago, I bought an 6' NRG-2 for the only piece of gear I have that uses a detachable cord- a Cambridge Audio Azur 640C CD player > ARC LS3 > ARC D130. Before that, I was using a $6 computer IEC cord. The NRG-2 took some time to burn in- 40-50 hours- and when it was done, it made all the kind of improvements to the 640C you mention of better soundstage and resoulton, and also made a quieter noise floor and was far more dynamic. This was my first serious power cord and I was an immediate convert.

However, I think that with the wire gauge and noise stopper, the NRG-2 is optimimised for digital and sources, probably best for a CD player and preamplifier but not the best idea for a power amplifier, where it might constrain the sound. For the power amplifier, I would suggest trying a heavier gauge and non-noise stopper design. As much as I like Audioquest for interconnects and the NRG-2 is very good, I am interested to try Kimber- besides being an enthsiastic fan of Kimber speaker cables, the power cords are said to be excellent.

In other thoughts on power, I would mention I had fantastic improvement when I plugged all sources and the premap into an isolation transformer power conditioner. This is a 12Amp Oneac ex-hospital conditioner that was $50 / $40 shipping on Ebay. This cost $1,200 new and weighs 43 lbs. With the power amp into the same wall socket as the Oneac, the ground loop hum was cured and again made the sound very dynamic and much quieter. If you decide to try a power conditioner like the Oneac or Powervar, buy only 10A or more to have plenty of headroom for all the sources and preamp.

Probably, I'm not more advanced than you in the world of power cords as I've only tried the NRG-2, but I was so immediately impressed by the improvements with the power conditioner and the AQ cord, I plan to take the power chain seriously in future.

Cheers,

Bambi B
