I just finished comparing the VH Audio Spectrum with the Nordost Quattro Fils, Oritek X-2s and Cardas Golden Reference (my previous ICs were Cable Co. pieces from XLO Sig. 2, 1.2 seconds wire with WBT connectors - all of the above were better than these).
I also have a Modwright SWL 9.0SE and a CJ amp (MV60SE), with a Modwright Plat. Sig. Sony 999.
I doubt the problem is your amp.
The VH Audio, IMS, IMHO, bettered all the other ICs. It is very transparent and open, as are the Nordost and Oriteks. But it has a much better tonal balance: the former are a little thin in the upper mid, lower treble (with that "silvery" tone one gets from silver wire) and the latter are a little light, a little recessed in the bass.
Jerry S. nailed the Cardas Golden Reference.
