What a great post, BillH, but I think much of what you say will fall on deaf ears, since, many believe that if it costs more, it's just gotta sound better, right? It reminds me of the time that I was visiting an audiophile friend who lives in another city. I had flown up to his home for a weekend of good sound and great barbecue. Late in the afternoon that Saturday, two of his local audiophile friends showed up at his house with an interconnect that they said was the best they ever heard. Into the system it went, and about 15 minutes later my friend was praising it to the hilt -- cleaner highs, solider images, deeper bass -- one would have thought to hear him rant that this was like the Second Coming. Hours passed and my friend was prepared to spend the $2,000 per pair that he was told the 1 meter pair sold for; all he wanted to know was where he could buy them, and did the dealer have enough sets for him to buy to connect each of his components?
Then, came the answer: "Well, they're actually not $2000/pair," one of them said, "I made these up from doorbell wire that I bought at Home Depot for 19¢ a foot; the RCA plugs I got at Radio Shack. In all, I've got about six bucks invested. Do you think we ought to market these to other audiophiles?"
It was only then that my friend realized that the sound was bright and lacked sufficient dynamic range.
