After conducting a thorough but frustrating search for speaker cables under $300, I decided to go to my local Radio Shack.com store and see what I could find in two-conductor shielded. For 50 cents a foot, I bought two 10-foot lengths of RS #9102324 actuator cable, which the Web site says is Tandy Wire (anyone know who makes this?). I used the 16 awg red and black leads and ignored the rest, put some heat shrink tubing on the ends, and I was in business.
Guys, I cleaned my ears twice and listened to some of my best-known CDs, and I swear I can't tell the difference between this stuff and well-known name brands costing 10 to 20 times more! Airy and delicate highs, a big soundstage, and clean, clear bass. I think I detect a bit of thinness at times, along with a bit of smearing on complex stuff, but mostly this stuff just rocks along with my system. Of course, YMMV, but this trial was so successful I am going for a double run, the first time I've tried this.
BTW, thanks for all the postings. I've learned more from this section of AA than any other, and I feel the inmates here are carrying on in the best traditions of the hobby, i.e., building musical systems rather than simply hooking expensive components together.
Peace.
