Home Cable Asylum

Interconnects, speaker wire, power cords. Ask the Cable Guys.

F/U -- okay, it took a lot less time than I thought!

Hi again, pcanis. As I spent the afternoon and evening listening to the monowire setup, I found myself becoming increasingly dissatisfied. The trade-offs just weren't worth it to me.

Yes, everything sounded more coherent, but at the cost of image "float", openness, and just plain musical excitement. As I played various albums that I know well, it became more and more apparent that all of the music seemed to be coming directly from the speakers, rather than from well defined points in the soundstage.

I believe that you made a rather facetious comment about becoming a mono fan elsewhere in this thread, and I think that you may have hit closer to the mark than you intended. With the monowire setup, it was as though the mono switch on my preamp had been pressed one quarter of the way in, if you catch my drift. I guess that what can be called (in a positive sense) a more "coherent" sound could also be called (in a negative sense) a more "compressed" or even a "congealed" sound.

When I bit the bullet and reconnected the second set of speaker cables, the soundstage simply blossomed and images broke free from the speakers. I still don't know if this is truly a more accurate presentation, but it makes the music much more interesting and involving to me.

Monowiring was an interesting experiment, and I appreciate your persuading me to give it a try, but I am now firmly convinced of the benefits of biwiring in achieving an expanded soundstage, improved spatial resolution, and a greater sense of air around individual instruments and voices.
