Home Cable Asylum

Interconnects, speaker wire, power cords. Ask the Cable Guys.

I have a pair of the DIY Quattro Fil here right now & the real QF too.

Thanks for letting me know what I always heard was true about internal conductors being THE SAME! Nice to know now how to build a set of the ICs myself if I ever get that third system up and running (old Dynaco ST-70).

A friend overseas who builds amps, speakers and his own small line of cables sent me a pair of the Eldorado Quattro Fil a few months ago. Used the ProFi RCA just like Nordost. He mentioned they beat SPM Reference every time he heard them compared and I can believe it. I loanded them to another AA member here in town and he said they were the best ICs he has ever had in his system (SET 2A3 amp)and that would mean TG Audio HSR, NBS Monitor IV, Cardas Cross & Golden Cross as well as others. Finally I found someone to loan me a set of the real QF last week to do head to head comparisons. They are VERY close. The DIY seems just a little bit warmer in the vocals and midrange. Bass on both is dead even. However, the real QF has a slight edge in getting leading edge transients a little crisper. Possibly has a small amount of added decay on top. Bells seem to have a slightly fuller sound too. This is only my second day in the comparison of the two as I spent last week comparing each one directly to my Omega Mikro. I have a custom built EVS M2 DAC w/ two outputs so I can do these comparisons w/o ever getting up from the sweet spot and pulling and plugging cables. I simply set there and let the remote from the preamp do instant comparisons. After all that I am coming to think I still like my Omega Mikro a litttle better going from DAC to pre than either one, but it's very close and I can see myself wanting them ALL! ;~)I have 2 systems and an HT set up so need lots of cables.

FWIW, seeing how a pre-built set of the DIY goes for around $300 to $350 and the QF around $700 to $750 used it would be a no brainer if you are bargain hunting to stay w/ DIY. If you want the VERY best, then the QF is still a slightly better cable IMHO. I don't think either will best my Pure Note Epsilons from pre to amp though as I had the QF & PN at a different audiophiles home (large SS amp)that posts here regularly last weekend and the PN SLAMMED the QF, AZ Matrix, and Audio Magic Sorcerer. IMO. I would easily place thse though above the Pro Silway, Cardas Golden, Zucable Warmouth and many other popular cables.

Let me know how yours sound. BTW, the guy who built mine did say they are psuedo-balanced and thus directional for whatever that means? Possibly due to one end having the shield attached I would guess.
