I know these things are not made anymore so no one can accuse me of working for the cable man! HA! But HOLY COW, once I plugged one of these stubborn, stiff, and HEAVY sumbitches in the system, I was FLOORED!I’ve heard about all the big boys out there in power cords. Everyone from Shunyata, Elrod, Omega Mikro, JPS, NBS, Purist, Wolffe, Audio Magic, Kharma, Electraglide and too many others to name. Current favorites are King Cobra V-2, Elrod EPS-3 Sig, Python Helix Vx, and Omega Mikro…not that these are the BEST cables there are, but IMS the combo of Omega Mikro, Elrod, and Shunyata gave me the most detailed and natural sound I have heard here.
Then on a fluke I saw one of these FIM Gold on A’gon and picked it up. Replaced my OM on the Emotive Audio Sira pre and MAN! Things got quite…REALLY quiet! Bass took on more authority and the top end became more detailed and more natural all at the same time. It was a MAJOR improvement, not quite night and day, but more than I have heard since I’ve achieved this current level of audionervosa. So I found a pair of FIM Gold XLR IC’s and picked them up. I replaced the Valhalla running from Esoteric CDP to the Sira pre. WOW, before having an all tube system I could always hear a little hiss coming from the speakers if the volume was way up w/ no music playing. After hooking up these seriously STIFF IC’s I actually thought that maybe I had the input selector on the wrong input b/c everything was so quiet. Well, I was already back in the chair by then so I figured what the hey, let’s hit play and see what happens. MUSIC! It really surprised me that the system got that quiet from one set of ICs. I still have Valhalla from pre to Cary amp, but this was a nice change. Here I kept the FIM but I could see different people preferring the “music†of the Valhalla over the FIM, though I do prefer the FIM at this point…still, the VAST differences in how quiet everything got was pretty shocking.
Ok, a few weeks later I see a 6 foot FIM Gold PC for sale and snatch it up. I was going to stick it on the Esoteric, but the damn thing had me so pissed trying to get it to bend properly to fit there I gave up. I had been running an Elrod EPS-3 Sig on the amp for weeks but just recently had pulled it to place on the Stealth PLC to get rid of the Electra Glide Epiphany II.x. So I placed another Omega Mikro on the amp and I liked the difference but I think most of it was from the EPS on the PLC….anyway, it was subtle. Well, out of frustration I stuck this damn FIM Gold PC from the wall to the amp b/c it’s the only darn place I had the time, patience and strength to get it to fit. WOW! This is the biggest improvement I have heard from a PC since 5 or 6 years ago when I first went from entry level PCs to a Shunyata Viper V-2. EVERYTHING snapped into tighter focus, the cymbal strikes become much better delineated and once again the word “natural†comes to mind Detail from top to bottom was improved…a LOT… and the bass was way tighter and faster. This cable on my tube amp simply SPANKED the Elrod’s, Shunyata’s, Electraglides, and Omega Mikro power cables I have tried here over the years? I’m pretty stunned actually and just wondering if anyone else had similar results w/ these cables? How could such a fantastic sounding piece of cable go out of business? I can only imagine it had something to do w/ how difficult they are to run…but then again, my original Omega Mikro ebony Twin Tube ICs are VERY difficult to deal w/ …NBS PCs are pretty darn hard to bend too…I can’t figure this one out?
I know one thing, this may well be the best bang for the buck right now in all of high end audio if someone has the forearm strength and patience to manipulate one of these monsters. The sound is fabulous and I AM LOOKING FOR MORE! Hint, hint? HA!
