Are your Volex 17604 cords made in Mexico or Asia? The older versions, made in Mexico, have bare brass plugs, while the newer Asian variety have plated plugs. I'm guessing the plating is nickel, and that the naked brass would be better for sound.
The shield on these cords is grounded at the plug end only, which helps their performance. You may get better performance if the shield is grounded at the load end, but this requires doing surgery on the cords.
