....who e-mailed my findings to Duster regarding the retermination of my Sony TA-E90ES preamp's captive power cord. I have 2 of these preamps - one not operational, so I decided to harvest the captive cord from that one (it already had an aftermarket hospital grade plug), and reterminate it with the Furutech Fi-11M(Cu) plug for $27 from A4Audio.com. I then was able to open the functional Sony and swap the cords - just unplug the internal connector and slide out the wire clamp. I was worried about resale value first and foremost, so I wanted to be able to return this to stock form when/if it comes time to resell.I've never been one who really put too much stock in the sound of connectors, but the price convinced me to give it a shot. At worst, it would look nicer. So imagine my surprise when I turned everything back on and settled down to listen. Initially, it was different, but not for the better. The smooth, sweet sound was lacking, and there was a constant glare to the sound that was only noticable on certain hard piano notes previously. Fortunately I had company drop by, and I left the CD Player on repeat.
When our company left several hours later, I went downstairs to stop the CD Player and go to bed. Several hours later my wife came down because I was still trying out different CD's. I was dumbfounded - To me, the change in sound was like adjusting the lens on a camera to sharpen a slightly blurred image.....the edges of the notes finally became distinct with no glare at all (even on the hardest piano notes), and a aubjectively far deeper and taller soundstage. The dynamics and impact were much better, and the whole sound became much more neutral. How that can happen from a AC plug change, I'll never know...
I was not expecting the magnitude of change - all for the better - that this change wrought on my system. I will be trying out an Oyaide outlet next.
Thanks again to Duster for touting the benefits of a relatively inexpensive change! I would have never taken the plunge without reading about his well documented AC connector/outlet experimentation in this forum.Kevin
