Try the Coax connection with a true 75 ohm lead of six feet or so. Even a meter length seems to outperform the optical connectors for me. I don't beleive it is the cable at issue, but the conversions before and after. Eliminating the optical gear is equivalent to eliminating an unnecessary headache. If I had to use an optical connection, the ST is the best. The EAS/EBU has never done it for me either. I always go back to the Coax connection. Various Coax cables will work better or worse, so don't judge the practice solely on a single cable. Unless your DAC is located at your uncle's place in Atlanta, then optical is impractical.
