Home Cable Asylum

Interconnects, speaker wire, power cords. Ask the Cable Guys.

Several things to consider regarding this review

One, Ulas has had a personal problem with me for awhile now. He has posted enough marginal and personal attacks to get banned for doing it to anyone else in this forum, and is on his last legs with regard to being banned from the forum anyway. This is obviously a potential factor in his comments on the cable.

Two, he does not like the TNT/Thorsten version of this cable, one that uses copper foil instead of the copper braid in a coax, and a solid center wire instead of a stranded center wire, in a hollow channel PE center insulation. There are very few folks who have not liked what the Cross Connected 89259 speaker cables sound like overall, perhaps less than 1% of all comments, but I know of NO criticisms of the TNT/Thorsten version at all.

Three, he has posted before that he thinks that the CVH version of CAT5 sounds bad too, in the same league as the CC89259. Once again, this is not exactly what the vast majority of folks have heard when they listened to the CVH CAT5.

Four, no one has ever posted about the CC89259 sounding worse than zip cords (that I can recall), except Ulas. The very few public posts that expressed any problems with the CC89259 were typically a result of improper construction, or use of something other than actual Belden 89259 coaxial cable as the raw material for the cable.

Five, his system is a bit unusual, in that it uses a SET tube amp (single ended triode with zero feedback) with a horn loaded loudspeaker. It is possible that for some reason, his amp is not happy with the cable loading, despite the CC89259 not being very capacitive, they do have fairly low inductance, and this might possibly upset an amp that was not unconditionally stable.
If there were some sort of amp instability, or oscillation occuring, this would definitely explain his comments on the sound. In any case, it would still be an isolated instance of a problem, as very few folks have had any sort of stability issues with the CC89259 speaker cables.

One way to check would be to connect a high quality Zobel network at the speakers, and see if the sound improved any.

FWIW, I have listned to the CC89259 on a tube amp with a horn loaded speaker, and do not hear any overt problems with the speaker cable.

Finally, all one has to do to see all the positive comments on CC89259 speaker cable, is to use the search engine, and see all the posted comments of all the folks who do like the overall sound, in many cases, they are very happy with the sound, not just a little bit pleased.

For some reviews of a internet vendor version of the CC89259, see:
http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue15/element.htm

This review also mentions the twisted pair interconnects ala my design, as ofered by two different vendors.

So try to take what Ulas says with a shaker's worth of salt, because his experiences, even if we take them at face value, are still very much some isolated and atypical ones.
