Interconnects, speaker wire, power cords. Ask the Cable Guys.

Re: DIY by Jon Risch CC89259 Cable

No, I’m not promoting anything. I am just venting my outrage at the way CC89259 destroys the music and I am vexed with Jon Risch’s extravagant claims regarding his cable. I feel the same way about UBYTE-2 and its promoter, Thorsten Loesch, who claimed his cable is “an all out Assault on the state of the Art.”
Interesting parallels: Two cables made with cross-connected coax, and two of the worst speaker cables I have ever tried.

Of course, everyone responds to different aspects of reproduced music. Jon Risch’s priority seems to be tonal neutrality, which is important in his job of voicing sound reinforcement systems. I don’t know Thorsten’s priorities but I understand he has abandoned coax in favor of fine magnet wire and litz wire. My priority is the integrity of the music. I don’t really care about overall tonal balance as long as the harmonic structure of each note is preserved. Every instrument I’ve played or worked on has had a different tonal balance. In the flesh, a D-18 doesn’t sound like a 00-18 yet they both sound like real guitars. Whether they are played in a concert hall or a shower stall, the unique character of each instrument is recognizable because the relative harmonic structure of each note is intact. Cross-connected coax obliterates the harmonic structure and makes real instruments sound like synthesizers. The damage is so obvious and abhorrent to me I find it hard to believe no one else hears it. Obviously, many audiophiles don’t hear what I do.

I think the damage is caused by the cross-connection. Considering the difficulty of constructing UBYTE-2 and the awful sound it produced, I promptly threw the cables out. But, as fate would have it, I recently came across a remaining scrap of coax. There was just enough for a single strand to reach each speaker. And, what do you know, it didn’t sound anything like what I remember of UBYTE-2 and it didn’t sound anything like CC89259. In fact, it didn’t sound bad at all. If you are a fan of cross-connected coax and have some scraps of wire left over, you might try comparing single-strand vs. cross-connected vs. double strand. If you don’t hear a difference in the quality of the music then you are probably among those who appreciate the effects of MP3 compression.
