It sounds great either way.
I know exactly what you mean about the spray tan - it looks freakish. I actually tried the copper first too. I originally thought I needed to put copper down before putting on the nickel. But I later found that isn't required on steel. However, as Doc points out, a strike of copper actually helps fill in scratches and seal pores in the steel, leading to a better finish (smoother and more rust resistant).
I still have more transformer bells on which to experiment. I think my sex amp will get disassembled at least. But I am not going to touch the lams - that really sounds like a lot of work.
