RE: Break in Time - Dac 2.1

My DAC 2.1B has been burning in for just over a week. The PRAT (hate that acronym! but what else to use?) is better and it's smoother sounding than the first couple of days. It sounded poorest after several hours until about the second day and then gradually got better. I'm not talking about earth-shattering differences here.

It hasn't been either "bloomy & euphonic" or "warm & fuzzy" with the stock EH 6922's (I'm actually quite impressed with this tube - not too anything, and yet very dynamic. This DAC seems very well balanced tonally with no bloat nor bloom and with exceptional clarity.

If, as some people say, it is best after 300 hours then it should be pretty good.

Thus far the sources being used are a Squeezebox Duet (wireless) and a Laptop (USB). I don't have a good quality transport, just an original Rega Planet.

The Duet & DAC2.1B sound is satisfactory (much better than the Duet internal DAC), but not as good as the better Audio Note transports I've heard; however, I'm about to build a good linear PS for the DUET which apparently is a big upgrade to the sound, even with an external DAC.

The Laptop (2.0GHz & Vista32) has shown some promise to be a really exceptional source for the DAC 2.1B. I've tried quite a few different configurations (software, harddrive type, etc.) and it's sounded really good at times and not so at others, and I can't remember which are which right now. If I were to step out on a limb, I might say at times it's been the best I've ever heard, but I haven't proven that by listening long term. It still needs a really good USB cable for starters - the dollar store one I have is probably holding things up. Lots to do yet.

One more comment: from your profile it looks like you're using the Stereovox XV2 digital cable. I'm using 1.5m XV, which I found (to my great surprise!) to be vastly superior to the Audio Note AN-V used as a digital cable with my sources.
