That is exactly how I'd describe the highs on my AN-Js through the Soro SE!
It's surprising that your AN-E speakers would be harsh with the Soro whereas the Trentes weren't. I wonder . . . could it be a problem with your AN-E Kit?
If you have an Audio Note dealer in your area it may be worth trying your Soro SE on their factory built AN-E's, perhaps the /D or /Spe to get a better idea where to look for the problem.
Another idea may be to contact Bob Neill, who is an AN dealer. I've seen his posts in the Speaker Asylum and I'm pretty sure he is both an Audio Note and JM Reynaud speaker enthusiast. Maybe he can shed some light on your experience of driving both speakers from the Soro. He may notice and respond if you ping him at the Speaker Asylum and reword your post appropriately.
My suspicion is it would be good to get the AN-E's working smoothly with the Soro first, and I believe they should, because they have as smooth but detailed high frequencies as any speaker I've heard.
As things stand right now, the Kit1/Preamp combo would give you more articulate bass and smooth detailed mids, but would also give a boost in energy at the top end, which might translate to more harsh than what you have now.
You might also want to follow up with Brian at AudioNoteKits to get his take on the situation.
Of course this is only one person's opinion and I could be wrong here. If so I apologize for stepping on anyone's toes. Bob & Brian have WAY more experience with AN gear than I'll ever have!
I'd sure like to know how it works out. I just can't imagine the Soro SE that I borrowed contributing to HF harshness with any fine speaker.
