For those somehow not willing or unable to outlay for the Cardas, I find the Audience a reasonable alternative. If I had the budget I'd get the Cardas no question. But the AU24 will allow you to enjoy your combo quite nicely in my experience. Depends on your budget.A nice low budget alternative is to go with the Cardas SE9 or SE11 and make them yourself. I believe Bobby uses the SE11 inside his speakers? Again not close to the GR sound I'm sure, but a taste of Cardas none the less.
For a DAC, consider the lovely Ack dAck! 2.0 w/ultra res. option (teflon bypass caps on output). Very good synergy with the Merlins and won't break the bank. THe sound of this piece is extremely musical.
