Re: PrimaLuna Prologue technical questions

If your using a cd player as a source you can probably drive the Prologue 5 with a passive pre-amp its input sensitivity is .8v so the 2v output of a cd player should be fine, you may give up a slight bit of dynamics but gain some transparency compared to an active pre-amp. As for a change in the sound, I would say that anything you add in the signal path is going to have an effect on the sound, a passive pre-amp usually will have the least effect on the sound, wheter or not you will be able to tell the differance or if its a good or bad differance is really up to you. As for wether or not the PrimaLuna uses a toroid im not sure, i dont know of any tube amps that use toroid output trannies and very few even use them for power trannies. If they were so much better than im sure the higher end tube amps would use them, and as far as i know they do not. If you dont have a PrimaLuna dealer around maybe you could check out some other brands that use a similar PP el34 or kt88 design that are in your price range it should give you at least some idea of the sound of a tube amp. Jolida may be a good place to start they make a pretty good el34 based integrated amp that is reasonably priced.
