There's no such thing as a free lunch. Most "variable gain" circuits have their own set of problems. I don't know what the CEC is doing inside, so I can't really comment.

Exactly. But the key point is to listen *first*! Many people don't listen, or listen after they have already formed a judgement by thinking.
