well, it'll only prevent something from being lost if you don't have a matched output on the source. The problem is that if you useoff-the-shelf gear you may need the preamp to make sure you don't lose anything. At the same time, you are adding stuff you may not want there.

However, if you look at it from a distance, the preamp is a bandage, not a solution. The solution is to do it right - then you don't need a preamp.
